Day Dream Your Way to a Better Resume

There have been many books on visualizing your way to a better life. They are a dream-about-it-and-they-will-come sort of thing. Unfortunately, real life doesn't mimic baseball movies.

However, visualizing content can be helpful. This involves more than merely thinking about it. Here are a couple of techniques:

Extreme fantasies

Think about the extreme you - the best that you could want out of your life or even the best you could have if you had a different life. Than think of situations, actions and personality traits. Then, for each of these thoughts, map them to your real life. Try to find a situation, action or personality trait that has similarities - even distant similarities. Than think of how you can incorporate them into your resume.

Get in touch with your inner schizophrenic

Have a multiple personality brainstorming session in your head. Make it a party, a meeting, a wake, a chance encounter or just about any situation. Use real or fictional people. Think about what they would say and how they would say it when talking about you. Go realistic, go bizarre, go wherever these people in your head take you. Once again, use the germ of the content and translate it into something useful for your resume.

Message to the overly PC out there. We know that schizophrenia is a serious disease that should not be taken lightly. We don't, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't use it to explain a concept and make this just a bit more interesting to read.

After reading this some of you may think that I must be on drugs, or maybe should be. There is no universal silver bullet, so not every technique is good for everybody. However, sometimes creativity requires you to move beyond your comfort zone. So give these techniques a chance. The worst that can happen is that you'll feel foolish, but no one ever needs to know.
